By their nature, most grassroots sports organizations are set up to serve a narrow segment of a local region. Many are on shoestring budgets and run purely on volunteer time, so the idea of marketing themselves to non-members is something most would like to do, but simply cannot with such limited resources.

This scenario makes it very difficult for a majority of people who might otherwise be interested in participating in local sports to even know there is an organization right in their back yard to serve them. Most new participants come in through word of mouth, which really puts new area residents at an even bigger disadvantage because it takes them longer to get to know the local people who might inform them about a local league.
